Build your Crisis Team
The Online Command program structure is based on the the United States' uniform system for managing domestic incidents, the National Incident Management System (NIMS), and is suitable for schools to implement in the four phases of their crisis planning: 1) prevention-mitigation; 2) preparedness; 3) response; and 4) recovery.  The program guides a school using NIMS and the Incident Command System (ICS) guidelines to define its crisis team.

Comprehensive Crisis Planning
Online Command utilizes and all-hazards approach and presents schools with a comprehensive list of potential hazards to consider. Identifying and planning for every possible hazard enables schools to develop thorugh and unique crisis plans as recommended by the Department of Education and the Department of Homeland Security.

4 Phases Addressed
The Online Command Program guides school crisis teams to think through:
  • All four phases of emergency management: Prevention-Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery;
  • Coordination among education, local government, law enforcement, public safety, public health, and mental health agencies;
  • Training programs for staff, teachers, and crisis response team members;
  • Drills and exercises for staff and students;
  • Addressing the needs of all populations, including students with disabilities and special needs;
  • Addressing infectious diseases, including pandemic flu
Recommended activities for every phase of planning relative to each possible emergency are presented for inclusion in school crisis planning.
